Volunteers and rangers of the National Park "Alatai"
September 21 is the International Cleanup Day. Within the frameworks of this event, the UNDP has organized a trip to the lake Kara-Suu located in Toktogul district on the territory of the nature park Alatai. Together with the volunteers from Toktogul city and the rangers from Alatai the UNDP has organized the cleanup campaign on the coast of this unique high-mountain lake.
Over 120 sacks of the garbage have been collected only for a couple of hours. These are mainly plastic bottles, glass bottles, spray canisters, and other things. The lake is located within three hours driving distance from Bishkek-Osh highway and the road is very difficult. Therefore, the waste-collecting vehicles have not gone there yet. The local rangers have to clean after the tourists in addition to their main nature conservation functions.
The territory of the park Alatai has a great capacity for the development of ecotourism and the UNDP/GEF project is working in this direction to create the tourist infrastructure, to develop the tourist routes and to introduce the new areas of the ecotourism, for example, the birdwatching.
The nature parks Alatai and Kan-Achuu were created in 2016. These are specially protected nature areas which are famous first of all for the habitats of the Red List species of the fauna and the flora including the snow leopard, the white-clawed bear, the Semenov fir, the Suusamyr pine weevil, etc.
The UNDP in the Kyrgyz Republic is implementing at present the project on conservation of globally important biodiversity in the Western Tian Shan, the main objective of which is to preserve unique natural complexes and biodiversity, to assist in the protection of rare and endangered animals and plants. The project is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and is being implemented in partnership with the State Agency for Environment Protection and Forestry under the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic.
