How to make Tourism Sustainable in the times of COVID

February 3, 2021

UNDP Kosovo gathered with partners to discuss the impact of COVID-19 on the tourism sector in Kosovo and to look at existing challenges and opportunities on building back better. The UNDP Kosovo Deputy Resident Representative, Mr. Niels Knudsen, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative opened the discussion emphasizing: “Although travel and tourism are among the most affected sectors of the pandemic, the crisis also presents an opportunity to rethink how can we build better and greener as we move forward”.

This online roundtable brought together representatives from the public sector working on the Kosovo Development Tourism Strategy 2021 – 2021, as well as experts from the private sector and CSOs active in the area of sustainable development.

Some key recommendations brought forth in the roundtable were that the main focus on the way forward should be:

-       On making tourism sustainable;

-       Green recovery and clean environment;

-       Digital transformation of the tourism sector;

-       Awareness raising.

This event was organized in the framework of the project “Accelerating Green Recovery in Kosovo through Ecotourism and Inclusive Governance”, which aims to bounce forward from the COVID-19 pandemic through greener recovery. It focuses on greening Kosovo’s tourism sector through public-private partnerships, coherent policy and a resilient and agile tourism strategy.
