August 28, 2023
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Kazakhstan and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan came together for a working session titled "Partnership for Effective Development". The session aimed to align Kazakhstan's strategic initiatives with the regional programmatic efforts of UNDP and other development partners, with the objective of accelerating progress towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Central Asia and beyond. It also provided a platform for sharing perspectives on key development priorities in Central Asia and Afghanistan.
Experts from the Istanbul Regional Hub were invited to contribute insights on development priorities and SDG progress in the region.
During the working session, the delegates noted Kazakhstan's commitment to establishing the UN Regional Center on Sustainable Development for Central Asia and Afghanistan, viewing it as a testament to the country's dedication to enhancing regional integration for the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
“The Centre's main mandate should stem from the common historical and geopolitical background, as all countries in Central Asia face similar challenges. Environmental pollution, gender inequality, problems related to transboundary water resources, corruption, etc. know no borders. The activities of the Regional Centre should be based not only on the interests of Kazakhstan, but on the interests of Central Asia. We would like to focus on certain areas where Kazakhstan has some advantages or best practices. Therefore, we believe that today's discussion should help us identify the main areas where we can see the future mandate of the UN Regional Centre UN,"said Didar Temenov, Director of the Department of Multilateral Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan.
The working session underscored Kazakhstan's growing role as facilitator of discussions concerning peace and sustainable development, both regionally and globally. As part of its commitment to regional integration, UNDP is actively expanding its regional programmatic efforts in Central Asia, focusing on accelerating regional and multi-country projects to deliver development gains that transcend borders. UNDP Kazakhstan is already involved in regional programmatic activities, including initiatives targeting the achievement of SDGs in Central Asia, the prevention of violent extremism among Central Asian youth, economic empowerment of Afghan women through education in Central Asian universities, and the combatting of gender-based violence.
"It is a time to have constructive dialogue and suggest practical ideas to stay on track. Kazakhstan's strong commitment and leadership in the Central Asia region are truly commendable. The progress we've seen is impressive. UNDP Kazakhstan remains steadfast in its role, closely aligning with Kazakhstan's direction and offering our support”,said Katarzyna Wawiernia, UNDP Resident Representative in Kazakhstan.
Over the years, UNDP has solidified its position as a trusted long-term partner of the Government of Kazakhstan, supporting the implementation of critical reform efforts. UNDP's convening power among partners, global technical expertise, and local presence have contributed to its unique value in this regard. During the session UNDP Kazakhstan expressed its willingness to continue supporting the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and KazAID in their efforts, ensuring a stronger partnership for regional programmatic activities. Additionally, UNDP stands prepared to collaborate with the Government of Kazakhstan to scale up regional programming and impact, aligning efforts with the UN Regional Center UN Regional Center for Sustainable Development.
