In this Background Paper for the 2026 Global Human Development Report written by UNDP Resident Representative Dr Kishan Khoday, Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are acknowledged as a global hotspot of the planetary crisis and impacts of the Anthropocene, characterized by the onset of multidimensional crises and an erosion of socio-economic resilience and future viability. Dr Khoday outlines the severe climate risks faced by SIDS, and explores a reparatory vision based on the need for repair, restoration and revalorization.
