SIDS on the Frontline: Planetary Transformation and the Future of Development

In his latest Blog Article, Dr Kishan Khoday, UNDP Resident Representative calls for transformation in climate resilient approaches through a Value Shift. He says the existential nature of Hurricane Melissa resonated deeply across society, a moment which is catalysing a shift in values as decision-makers and communities increasingly recognizing nature as a foundation for human security and resilience. Moving forward, scope exists to build on this process to rethinking key features of classic development systems. One example is the central concept of agency, with calls to shift from conventional human-centred approaches, to embrace new distributed concepts of agency within ecosystems at the centre. As the development landscape undergoes significant upheaval and shifts, development thinking and policy frameworks must also evolve. Multidimensional risks require integrated responses and better development metrics. These metrics are more than just technical tools; they shape how vulnerability is understood, how future inequalities are forecasted, and how policy priorities are set.
