UNDP and partners reaffirmed to pursue higher Human Development for Indonesia

UNDP and Indonesia’s Development Planning Agency (BAPENAS) reviewed their joint achievements and priorities to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Jakarta, 16 February 2023 -  The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) reaffirmed its cooperation for Indonesia to meet the SDGs by accelerating the country’s transition to an inclusive green economy, while partners praised its tireless support.

UNDP convened the annual dialogue jointly with the National Development Planning Agency (BAPENAS) to review their joint achievements and priorities on 16 February. Entitled “Innovative Financing, Just Transition, and Building Resilience to Accelerate SDGs”, the event was opened by the Minister of National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), Mr. Suharso Manoarfa.

Coordinating Minister of Maritime and Investment Affairs, Mr. Luhut Binsar Panjaitan and Minister of Villages, Disadvantaged Regions and Transmigration, Mr. Halim Iskandar delivered video remarks in which they commend fruitful partnership with UNDP and share expectations for the future collaboration.

“I appreciate the tremendous support of UNDP to Indonesia in many steps along the way–in our journey towards achieving sustainable development both nationally and in our SDG stewardship globally," said BAPPENAS Minister Mr. Monoarfa in his keynote remarks, delivered by BAPPENAS Deputy Minister for Development Funding, Mr. Scenaider CH Siahaan.

He noted that leaving no one behind could only be addressed through strengthened multilateralism through development cooperation

UN Assistant Secretary-General and UNDP Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, Ms. Kanni Wignaraja delivered her opening remarks via a video message.

“I had the pleasure to meet with many of you last year and was inspired by your vision for Indonesia’s prosperity, the determination to deliver behind it and the trust you place on the partnership with UNDP to address pressing development challenges within Indonesia and beyond, ” said Ms. Wignaraja.

UNDP Resident Representative for Indonesia, Mr. Norimasa Shimomura moderated the first dialogue, which focused on issues such as innovative SDG and climate financing, just energy transition, and building resilience to accelerate SDGs achievement.

"In recent years, Indonesia has demonstrated a number of impact results that have placed the nation on the world map in addressing major concerns such as the climate crisis and the acceleration of the SDGs. UNDP is thrilled to be a part of these significant achievements, which we have been sharing with the worldwide community as best practices through our global network. We are hugely grateful to our partnership with the Government of Indonesia, international community, civil society and private sector that enable us to attain many things together,” said Mr. Shimomura.

Vice-Minister of Environment and Forestry, Mr. Alue Dohong, Director General of New and Renewable Energy of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr Dadan Kusdiana, Head of Health Policy Development of the Ministry of Health, Ms. Syarifah Liza Munira took part in the first session. Vice Coordinating Chairwoman III for Maritime, Investment and Foreign Affairs of KADIN, Ms. Shinta Widjaja Kamdani also took part in the first session in person, recognizing far-reaching partnership they enjoy with UNDP.

The second session, moderated by Dr. Yanuar Nugroho, Expert Coordinator at the National Secretariat of SDG Implementation, brought together some of UNDP’s key implementing partners including the Governor of Central Sulawesi, Mr. Rusdy Mastura, the Vice Chairperson of the National Alms Agency (Baznas), Mr. Mokhamad Mahdum and the Head of Regional Hub of Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), Mr. Salah Jelassi. The session which reflected on UNDP’s strong commitment to development partners was also enriched with the remarks of UNICEF Representative in Indonesia, Ms. Maniza Zaman and Ms. Puteri Anetta Komarudin, Youth Representative and Member of Indonesia’s House of Representatives.

UNDP Indonesia has a broad-based collaboration with the Government of Indonesia in areas ranging from COVID-19 recovery, inclusive green economic growth, climate action and just energy transition, community resilience-building, innovative development financing, to supporting Indonesia’s aspiration to support other archipelagic and island countries around the world.  The meeting was joined by many other important partners of UNDP from the Government of Indonesia, demonstrating the important role UNDP plays in supporting Indonesia’s ambition to attain SDGs without leaving no one behind.
