A Toolkit for Developing Multi-Sectoral, Multi-Stakeholder City Air Quality Action Plan

February 6, 2025

Under the EU-UNDP collaborative global project, "Advancing Health and Environmental Sustainability through Action on Air Pollution," a global initiative was launched to address pollution and its impact on public health. The project focuses on reducing air pollution and related non-communicable diseases (NCDs) by improving multi-sectoral stakeholder governance at national and local levels and facilitated the development of a Legal Environment Assessment (LEA) for air pollution and health.

UNDP’s Toolkit for Developing Multi-Sectoral, Multi-Stakeholder City Air Quality Action Plan (MSAP) provides a comprehensive framework for Indian cities to address air quality challenges systematically. Drawing on best practices from global air quality management, including the European Union’s Air Quality Plans, the toolkit equips policymakers with practical tools, technologies, management strategies, and case studies tailored to India’s unique urban contexts. It guides cities in designing, implementing, monitoring, and reporting effective air quality interventions, fostering a collaborative approach that integrates health, environmental, and economic considerations.

The implementation of such a framework is essential for reducing the health and economic burdens of air pollution in India. By leveraging global expertise and local insights, this initiative aims to create sustainable, impactful solutions that enhance the well-being of India’s urban populations while advancing the country’s environmental and public health objectives.
