Legal Environment Assessment for Air Pollution and Health in India

Legal Environment Assessment for Air Pollution and Health in India
February 4, 2025
UNDP in collaboration with the European Union, launched a global initiative to address pollution and its impact on public health. The project focuses on reducing air pollution and related non-communicable diseases (NCDs) through improving multi-sectoral governance at national and local levels, and enabled the development of three studies in India: an investment case for air pollution reduction, a legal environment assessment (LEA) for air pollution and health, and multi-sectoral action plans on air pollution and health for the cities of Amritsar and Gurugram.
This Legal Environment Assessment for Air Pollution and Health in India, represents the nation’s first comprehensive study evaluating the effectiveness of its legal and policy frameworks in addressing air pollution and its adverse health impacts. This assessment examines 20 laws, regulatory measures and sector-specific initiatives.
The results and recommendations aim to provide decision-makers with a tool to evaluate and optimise laws, policies and regulations, and advocate for the development of multisectoral policies that reduce public health risks related to air pollution.
