The first quarter of 2026 marked a period of strong momentum for UNDP The Gambia’s environmental sustainability efforts, with significant progress achieved through strategic coordination, strengthened partnerships, and enhanced stakeholder engagement. As the FFEM project transitions into its next phase, these efforts are laying a solid foundation for more impactful and results-driven implementation.

Strengthening oversight and strategic direction

UNDP convened key governance platforms, including the Technical Committee (TC) and Project Steering Committee (PSC) meetings, bringing together national institutions, development partners, and key stakeholders. These sessions provided an important opportunity to review progress, assess implementation challenges, and identify practical solutions to enhance delivery.

A comprehensive financial review ensured transparency and accountability, while priority activities for 2026 were clearly defined, with roles and responsibilities assigned. The meetings also reinforced collective ownership of the project and aligned stakeholders around a shared vision for sustainable environmental management.

Deepening partnerships for national impact

In preparation for the next phase of implementation, UNDP intensified engagement with key national stakeholders, including the National Environment Agency (NEA), Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC), NAWEC, and civil society organizations.

These consultations strengthened coordination, enhanced alignment of priorities, and reinforced national ownership of the project. By fostering inclusive and collaborative partnerships, UNDP continues to support a coherent and integrated approach to environmental governance in The Gambia.

Promoting circular economy solutions

As part of its advocacy and outreach efforts, UNDP actively participated in the Waste to Wealth Fair 2026, contributing to a high-level panel discussion on “Policy, Investment, and Partnerships for a Circular Gambia.”

The event brought together government institutions, development partners, academia, and civil society, providing a dynamic platform to exchange ideas and promote innovative solutions for sustainable waste management. UNDP’s engagement highlighted the importance of partnerships and policy coherence in advancing circular economy practices and environmental sustainability.

Looking ahead

Building on the strong momentum of the first quarter, UNDP The Gambia will continue to focus on delivering priority interventions, strengthening multi-stakeholder collaboration, and advancing sustainable solutions for the management of hazardous chemicals, including PCBs and uPOPs.

These efforts underscore UNDP’s commitment to supporting The Gambia in achieving its environmental and climate goals, while promoting sustainable development pathways that benefit communities and future generations.
