Afghanistan:
Rapid Support Before Winter
Afghanistan faces a protracted crisis marked by conflict, economic collapse, climate shocks, and widespread food insecurity. The return of over 800,000 Afghans from Iran and Pakistan, coupled with a 6.0-magnitude earthquake in Kunar and Nangarhar in August 2025, left more than 1 million people affected. With winter approaching, timely action is critical.
The REVIVE project is one of UNDP’s fastest-moving initiatives in Afghanistan. Daily coordination across regional offices, field teams, and local authorities allows activities to be sequenced for rapid results. Community committees play a central role in identifying priority sites, monitoring construction, resolving disputes, and ensuring long-term ownership.
Preparations are underway to install 60 emergency greenhouses and 30 food preservation units, benefiting 306,000 people, while cash-for-work programs rehabilitate irrigation canals, roads, and flood protection walls. “REVIVE restores dignity, creates jobs, and gives families the confidence that change is possible,” said Stephen Rodriques, UNDP Resident Representative in Afghanistan.
