Peacebuilding: Building trust, preventing conflict, and sustaining peace

Peace and development are inseparable. UNDP supports countries in anticipating risks, preventing conflict, and strengthening institutions and services that enable people to live free from fear and violence. Through a developmental approach to peacebuilding, we work across the full crisis cycle, from early warning to long-term recovery, addressing root causes of fragility, expanding access to justice, and rebuilding trust in governance. With deep field presence and a commitment to stay and deliver in the most fragile settings, our support is locally led, nationally owned, and inclusive, ensuring that diverse communities shape and sustain lasting peace.

UNDP supports peacebuilding through approaches that link prevention, governance, and resilience. We work with countries to:

  • Support the development of national prevention strategies that help governments identify risks early, coordinate responses, and build systems that reduce tensions before they escalate.
  • Promote inclusive dialogue during political transitions, ensuring women, youth, and marginalized groups shape peaceful, legitimate, and sustainable pathways forward.
  • Advance development solutions to prevent violent extremism by addressing local drivers of exclusion, strengthening social cohesion, and expanding opportunities for at-risk communities.
  • Advance peacebuilding priorities during UN mission transitions by reinforcing national institutions, services, and community resilience as peace operations draw down.
  • Implement peacebuilding programmes that strengthen mediation efforts and support the implementation of peace agreements, enabling communities and institutions to resolve disputes, heal divisions, and sustain progress over time.
