Opening Remarks by Mr James George at the World Youth Development Forum – Green Consumption and Sustainable Development Thematic Forum
July 16, 2025
UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in China, James George, delivered opening remarks at the World Youth Development Forum – Green Consumption and Sustainable Development Thematic Forum in Suzhou, China.
Dear Mr. Xu Xiao, President of the All-China Youth Federation,
Mrs. Amakobe Sande, UNICEF Representative,
Distinguished guests, colleagues, and all the amazing young changemakers.
A warm welcome to you all! I am truly delighted to join you today at this Forum.
Looking around this room, I feel a great sense of enthusiasm and energy. It’s inspiring to see so many passionate young leaders from across the globe coming together to address one of the most urgent challenges of our time—building a sustainable future for our planet.
Ten years ago, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted as a universal call to action to protect the planet and ensure peace and prosperity for all by 2030.
But today, with less than five years to go, we’re at a pivotal moment. The climate crisis is only accelerating, and time is running out.
Our world is sending us a clear warning. 2024 was the hottest year ever recorded, with global temperatures 1.55°C above pre-industrial levels. Climate action is no longer a choice—it is imperative.
And it is you, the youth —who hold the power to turn the tide. You are systems thinkers, policy shapers, innovation drivers, community mobilisers and changemakers.
Whether you’re organizing at the grassroots level, starting businesses as entrepreneurs, advocating for green lifestyles, or undertaking research and advocacy for policy changes, your active engagement is critical.
Ladies and gentlemen,
The youth have always led the way, challenged the orthodoxy and reimagined the future.
With time, names and personalities have taken greater prominence on some the most profound discoveries that have defined our generation.
It is easy to gloss over the young idealism, imagination and unbridled passion and brilliance that laid the foundations for it.
The Wright Brothers were in their earlier twenties when they redefined aviation and flight. Marie Curie was 36 years old when she was awarded the Nobel Prize. As you know she was the first person to win the Nobel Prize twice – notably as well in two different scientific fields.
Some of the world’s greatest scientists, mathematicians, botanists, computer scientists, inventors, corporate titans, community and political leaders were in their twenties and thirties when they reimagined the world.
"One lesson is clear - unlocking the power of youth to address climate change is one of the greatest opportunities and hope we have in hand to reshape the future world."
At UNDP, we are fully committed to supporting youth at every step of the way.
Over the last three years, we have focused on youth innovation and entrepreneurships; 21st century and digital skills for the future of work; climate action; and multi-stakeholder platforms in advancing thought leadership in sustainable development.
In partnership with our sister UN agencies, we’ve launched several flagship initiatives including the Youth Co:Lab, Movers Programme, and Youth Empowerment in Climate Action Platform (YECAP).
Through these initiatives, we have designed more than 40 comprehensive courses focused on SDG knowledge and entrepreneurship, conducted over 1,200 training sessions and workshops, and equipped more than 120,000 young people with enhanced expertise in the SDGs, entrepreneurial skills, and climate literacy. Over 400 universities have joined us on this transformative journey.
One lesson is clear - unlocking the power of youth to address climate change is one of the greatest opportunities and hope we have in hand to reshape the future world.
At the Summit of the Future on 22 September 2024, world leaders adopted the Pact for the Future and its annexes: the Global Digital Compact and Declaration on Future Generations.
The Pact for the Future underscores the critical role of ensuring that the youth are empowered as agents of change within the framework of the SDGs. The achievement of the SDGs will require the active involvement of young people at all levels.
But this also necessitates that we scale up the investments to ensure they can fully participate in the socio-economic development of their countries.
We invite all stakeholders—governments, the private sector, and civil society organizations—to continue to engage and provide the spaces, opportunities and technical and financial platforms that empower young people to help reimagine and shape the future of a people-centred green transformation.
In closing, let me express my sincere appreciation to the All-China Youth Federation, and UNICEF for co-hosting this forum.
I wish the Forum a great success, and I look forward to working, learning and collaborating together as we reimagine a world that is inclusive, sustainable and resilient for everyone, everywhere.
Thank you.
