May 9, 2025
China’s targeted conservation measures have yielded substantial recoveries in rare and endangered migratory waterbird populations. The report “Ten Successful Stories of Waterbird Protection in China” uses ten representative species, including Baer's Pochard and Siberian Crane, which is critically endangered in the IUCN Red List, to demonstrate these successes and underscore the country’s leadership in global migratory-bird conservation.
These stories include recoveries of Black-faced Spoonbills, which have risen from around 300 in the 1980s to approximately 6,000 today, Black-necked Cranes tripling from just over 5,000 in the 1990s to more than 15,000, and Oriental Storks growing from 3,000 to nearly 10,000. These conservation efforts highlight China’s commitment to biodiversity through decisive actions in research, habitat restoration, surveying, community engagement, and international cooperation, playing an exemplary role in global migratory bird conservation.
