Balancing Wetland, Black-necked Crane, and Community Livelihoods through Sustainable Management Plan in Yunnan Dashanbao Black-necked Crane National Nature Reserve

July 14, 2025

The Yunnan Dashanbao Black-necked Crane National Nature Reserve is a vital wintering site for the globally rare Black-necked Crane. While the crane population has grown, habitat degradation, invasive species, and increasing conflicts with local communities have threatened the fragile balance between conservation and livelihoods. To address these challenges, a sustainable management plan was implemented, integrating habitat restoration, food provisioning for cranes, wetland protection, and community engagement.

Key actions included comprehensive grazing ban, restoration of marshlands, and establishment of food bases for cranes. Community livelihoods were supported through compensation, job training, and the promotion of highland agricultural products. This plan has improved wetland health, safeguarded Black-necked Cranes, and enhanced community livelihoods by resolving human–crane conflict. It also promotes long-term harmony between conservation and development, demonstrating the value of integrated, adaptive management for migratory birds in highland wetlands.
