UNDP-Tongji (RISE) SDG Innovation Lab on Urban Disaster Resilience

Summary

This project aims to promote sustainable urban development and enhance urban resilience and adaptability in China and facilitate international exchanges on climate-resilient cities. In collaboration with UNDP's Crisis Bureau, it established the UNDP China -Tongji (RISE) SDG Innovation Lab on Climate and Disaster Resilience located at the College of Civil Engineering of Tongji University. 

Over the course of three years, the project will enhance the Lab’s capacities, develop joint training programme; map out cutting-edge, scalable, tech-based solutions for enhancing urban resilience; organise thematic conferences and workshops; and undertake frontier research and explore policy innovations to generate knowledge that can inform policies for urban resilience.

Achievements

  • Hosted the first ever the first ever RISE Week with Tongji University in October 2025, bringing together over 100 policymakers, engineers, and development experts from 16 countries to co-create innovative solutions to strengthen urban resilience to climate change and natural disasters.
