Youth Trends & Migration Tendency

Why do young people in Bosnia and Herzegovina consider leaving, and what would make staying a viable choice?

Drawing on SCORE BiH 2025 data from 1,304 respondents aged 18–35, with selected comparisons to 2020, Youth Trends & Migration Tendency examines migration aspirations alongside social cohesion, security, wellbeing, inclusion and civic participation.

Nearly half of young respondents hope to leave the country in the future, yet many also express a strong sense of belonging to Bosnia and Herzegovina. The report finds that migration aspirations are associated not only with economic opportunities but also with satisfaction with local living conditions, personal safety and future prospects. It highlights differences among young women, men and vulnerable youth, and offers recommendations for policies that make staying a viable choice.
