Young Legal Professionals Gain Firsthand Courtroom Experience Through AGO–UNDP Internship Programme
Learning the Courtroom: Young Law Graduates Step Into Justice
December 2, 2025
The 2025 cohort of young legal interns at the Attorney General’s Office, gaining real-world exposure to Bangladesh’s justice system through the AGO–UNDP partnership.
In October 2025, 25 young law graduates walked into the Bangladesh Attorney General’s Office (AGO) with a mix of excitement and curiosity. This wasn’t just another internship, it was a chance to see the justice system in action, beyond textbooks and lectures, through a programme jointly run by UNDP Bangladesh and AGO.
From the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court , their days were a whirlwind of observation and learning. They watched lawyers present arguments, followed files moving through the system, and saw how decisions were carefully crafted. For many, it was their first real encounter with the complexity of court life.
For Sreoshi Karmakar, from BRAC University, transcribing the proceedings of the 13th Amendment brought constitutional law to life. As she put it, “I finally understood how constitutional matters are analysed in real time.” Meanwhile, Asif Jawad, from Rajshahi University discovered a new path: “I thought I’d go into the judiciary, but seeing lawyers in action made me want to become a Supreme Court lawyer.”
Even simple skills felt empowering. Mahbuba Akhter Swarna from Rajshahi University now confidently navigates court files. The interns also noticed challenges, particularly for women, like limited access to basic facilities, a reminder of the need for more inclusive spaces in the judiciary.
Meeting the Chief Justice left a lasting impression, as did watching experienced lawyers argue complex cases. These moments reinforced the importance of mentorship, discipline, and integrity in the profession.
For UNDP, investing in young legal minds is about more than internships; it’s about shaping the future of Bangladesh’s justice system. For AGO, it’s an opportunity to nurture skilled, motivated professionals who can strengthen the office and the broader legal ecosystem.
By the end of the programme, the interns carried with them a deeper understanding of justice in practice, ready to step into their careers with knowledge, confidence, and a commitment to contribute meaningfully to the nation.
