Following a pilot test in Comandante Andresito, the insurance program is expanding to Puerto Iguazú, Puerto Esperanza, Puerto Libertad, and Wanda alongside on-site training activities to support rural communities coexisting with jaguars.
A year from its launch, the Jaguar Protection Insurance expands coverage and strengthens coexistence in Misiones
May 21, 2026
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Argentina took part of a mission in Misiones.
One year after the launch of its pilot phase in Comandante Andresito, the Jaguar Protection Insurance is entering a new stage in the province of Misiones by expanding its territorial coverage and strengthening the coexistence efforts with rural producers in new localities across the northern part of the province.
In this context, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Argentina and the Government of the Province of Misiones carried out a mission accompanying the expansion of the insurance program to the municipalities of Puerto Iguazú, Puerto Esperanza, Puerto Libertad, and Wanda. The initiative included the participation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Production, the insurance company Río Uruguay Seguros (RUS), and the specialized organizations Aves Argentinas and Proyecto Yaguareté (CeIBA–CONICET).
The initiative began in 2025.
From pilot phase to territorial expansion
The Jaguar Protection Insurance began its implementation in 2025 in Comandante Andresito as a pilot experience aimed at addressing one of the main conservation challenges facing the species: conflicts between livestock production and retaliatory hunting.
During its first year, the program helped consolidate a system for reporting, verifying, and compensating in cases of confirmed predation. During that period, 21 reports were filed within the covered area, a significant increase compared to previous years, reflecting a shift in how conflicts are addressed: more producers are turning to institutional channels and technical support, integrating conservation measures as part of their productive activities.
Based on these lessons and results, the Government of Misiones resolved to extend the insurance program to Puerto Iguazú, Puerto Esperanza, Puerto Libertad, and Wanda, launching a new phase of the initiative, supported by the global IRFF and BIOFIN programmes, aimed at supporting more rural productive communities that coexist daily with jaguars.
At the end of the visit, a coordination workshop was held to discuss the future of the project.
On-site training for new localities
Between April 21 and 24, interinstitutional teams carried out a tour in Comandante Andresito and the four municipalities recently incorporated into the insurance program in the Iguazú department. The objective was to introduce the tool, train local farmers, and strengthen coexistence strategies.
The work included visits to farms, meetings with producers, encounters with municipal authorities and park rangers, and communication activities with the locals. In each of these places the focus was on explaining how the insurance works, clearing any doubts, and sharing practices that help prevent conflicts with native wildlife.
Members of the delegation accompanied an active claim under review.
Productive coexistence: a long-term commitment
As part of this new phase, UNDP and the Government of Misiones are developing coexistence materials aimed at rural producers in the localities covered by the insurance program. These materials, funded by UNDP and distributed free of charge, will provide practical tools to help understand, prevent, and manage coexistence with jaguars.
This effort is complemented by an educational component through materials and training activities in the province’s Agricultural Family Schools (EFAs), with the goal of ensuring that future generations of producers integrate conservation into rural development.
In this way, the Jaguar Protection Insurance is consolidating itself as a pioneering public policy worldwide, one that evolves through experience and expands territorially to demonstrate that, in Misiones, production and conservation can coexist and strengthen one another.
