Over a three-month period, experts and sector leaders took part in a technical training cycle aimed at building a shared understanding of fundamental principles, drawing extensively on practical experiences and case studies from different regions around the world.

The training cycle lasted for three months.
Between April and June, the Environmental Governance Programme (EGP) conducted the first training cycle designed to strengthen provincial governments’ capacities in the environmental management of mining activities.
The cycle was jointly implemented by UNDP Argentina and the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (SwEPA), funded by Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida). The initiative sought to build a shared understanding of key principles, drawing extensively on practical experiences and case studies from various regions around the world.
The workshops were aimed at strengthening provincial governments' capacity for the environmental management of mining activities.
The main objective of the sessions was to contribute to improving public decision-making processes, preventing and managing environmental impacts, and strengthening institutional capacities at the provincial level. Through a combination of technical content and practical experiences, participants were provided with tools applicable to the planning and management of mining activities.
“Argentina has great potential to provide the world with strategic mineral resources that are fundamental to the global energy transition. Sweden has a long mining tradition and can assist with cutting-edge technological solutions, integrating sustainability perspectives. Decisions at the beginning of a project, for example, by following the highest environmental standards, are key to ensuring sustainable investments over time. This training program is a concrete step in that direction” commented the ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden in Argentina Torsten Ericsson about the initiative.
The initiative sought to build a shared understanding of fundamental principles, drawing extensively on practical experiences and case studies from different regions of the world.
Reflecting the impact of the initiative, Pedro Inda, from the province of Rio Negro mentioned: These training sessions on mining for provincial governments are a great tool for us to stay updated on the procedures and techniques being implemented worldwide. They also help strengthen technical teams in assessing the environmental impacts of this activity. This aligns with the province's objectives regarding mining policy and our goal to develop a sound policy in full compliance with environmental regulations."
Furthermore, Ana Moyano from the government of the Province of Salta added: “I would like to thank the organizers for making this training cycle possible, which provided me with essential baseline information on how environmental impact assessments are conducted in other parts of the world. This allows us to compare and draw examples for the projects currently under development in our province. I look forward to participating in the next training cycle”.
The program was held through a series of virtual meetings that enabled the participation of technical teams and public officials from different provinces, as well as representatives from state-owned companies. This format encouraged continuous knowledge exchange and the progressive development of expertise among participants, bringing together more than 200 people from across the country in each session.
Building on the results and lessons learned during this first phase, a second training cycle is planned for the second half of the year. This new stage will seek to deepen the knowledge developed, expand the topics covered, and continue strengthening cooperation among provincial institutions committed to environmental governance in Argentina’s mining sector.
