Reintegration of veterans with disabilities

The United Nations Development Programme invites to participate in the training for professionals working with veterans with disabilities in communities.

Goal of the training:

acquire or improve knowledge required for working with veterans with disabilities for the purpose of their social rehabilitation and reintegration.

For whom?

This training will be interesting and useful for:

  • professionals in the social service centres; centres for social services; psychosocial rehabilitation centres of the Ministry of Veterans Affairs; comprehensive rehabilitation centres for persons with disabilities;
  • representatives of civil society organisations providing services to veterans with disabilities;
  • representatives of houses of veterans and veterans’ spaces.

In general, two identical training sessions will be held for two different groups.

Approximate dates of trainings:

Group 1 – 15–16 and 22–23 September

Group 2 – 29–30 September and 6–7 October

Duration of the training:

One training will last for 4 days, 4.5 hours per day. It is planned to hold two training sessions within the framework of this initiative to cover the maximum number of participants.

Format of the training — online (via Zoom). The registered and selected participants of the first training will receive an e-mail with a link by 12 September.

During the training, the participants will acquire or improve their knowledge of the following:

  • the concept of disability; types of disabilities; models of disability; application of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF); systems of social assistance, benefits and state guarantees for persons with disabilities; application of the human rights-based approach;
  • the status of “combatant” and “war veteran”;
  • social services for veterans with disabilities; Ukrainian and international experience of successful work with veterans with disabilities;
  • various approaches to working with veterans (gender-differentiated needs-based approach; peer-to-peer approach);
  • effects of traumatic events on persons returning from the combat zone; symptoms and manifestations of post-traumatic stress disorder;
  • establishing contact and engaging with veterans with disabilities; 
  • peculiarities of providing psychosocial assistance (case management) to veterans with disabilities;
  • referral procedures and mechanisms;
  • development and implementation of programmes for veterans with disabilities in communities and sources of their funding;
  • service mapping;
  • activation tools for veterans with disabilities to engage them in the community life (direct democracy instruments, self-organisation of veterans, veterans’ spaces)

Trainers are subject matter experts in relevant areas, including veterans.

Certification criteria

Upon completion of the training, the participants will receive electronic certificates of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ukraine if the following conditions are met:

  • attending at least 2/3 of all sessions (based on Zoom participant lists)
  • active engagement during the event (participation in discussions, chat interaction, etc.)
  • keeping camera on during at least 2/3 of sessions;
  • filling out a feedback form.

How to join?

In order to participate in the first training, you need to fill out a registration form available through the link up to and including September 11. The registered and selected participants will receive an e-mail with details by September 12.
