Global Biodiversity Framework Early Action Support (GBF-EAS)
Project summary:
The project comprises several key components designed to strengthen Ukraine's alignment with global biodiversity goals. First, a rapid review of the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) will be conducted to ensure alignment with the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). This will be accompanied by an assessment of monitoring systems to evaluate their effectiveness and identify areas for improvement. Furthermore, the initiative will focus on aligning policies and institutional structures with the Global Biodiversity Framework to ensure coherence and integration. Biodiversity finance activities are also a core aspect of the project, with the aim of mobilising resources for conservation efforts.
The geographical focus is on government-controlled territories within Ukraine, contributing to broader efforts spanning over 40 countries. The project is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) with a budget of $263,115. The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine is the primary beneficiary. This project is set to run from 2023 to 2025.
Project goal:
To fast-track readiness and early actions to implement the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework by providing financial and technical support to GEF-eligible Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in their work to align their national targets, NBSAPs, policy frameworks, monitoring frameworks, and finance plans with the Global Biodiversity Framework.
Expected results:
NBSAP, policy framework plan, monitoring framework plan, biodiversity finance plans are developed and/or secure government endorsement, in line with GBF targets.
