Sievierodonetsk, Ukraine, 27 January 2022 – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ukraine has purchased furniture and equipment for the front office of a police department, which was officially opened today in Sievierodonetsk in Luhansk Oblast.

The primary task of the new front office is to establish well-coordinated communication between the local population and the police, and to strengthen trust in law enforcement bodies. From now on, the citizens of Sievierodonetsk and the surrounding communities will be able to freely contact the specialists at the front office of the police department, and obtain the services they need quickly and in comfortable conditions.

The Head of the Community Security and Social Cohesion Component of the UN Recovery and Peacebuilding Programme, Federica Dispenza, congratulated the community with the opening of the new police department front office, and noted the importance of continuing UNDP's long-term partnership with the police and local communities.

“The opening of the new police department front office will help law enforcement staff and the community overcome any existing barriers in their communication, and make the police more open and approachable to the public," Dispenza said. “Supporting and developing community security in eastern Ukraine remain our top priority, and we believe that thanks to the professionalism of the specialists who will work in this office, this progress will only accelerate, and trust in law enforcement bodies among the population will increase. We really want people living in conflict-affected communities in eastern Ukraine to feel safer and know that in difficult situations they can openly turn to the police for help.”

UNDP purchased furniture and computer equipment for the newly established front office under the UN Recovery and Peacebuilding Pogramme, with financial support from the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

The Head of the Main Department of the National Police in Luhansk Oblast, Oleh Hryhorov, expressed his gratitude to UNDP for its assistance in opening the police front office.

"The front office is the face of the territorial police unit, because that's where most visitors come," Hryhorov said. "Its opening is another step towards the development and reform of Luhansk Oblast police."

In addition, UNDP organized a series of trainings on effective communications to prepare police officers to work with the public in the office.
