Kyiv, 28 September 2023 – With generous financial support from the Government of Sweden, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ukraine, together with partners, has developed an online monitoring system for waterways in Chernihiv Oblast. The system enables comprehensive overview of water quality and the factors that affect its condition.

The online monitoring system for waterways in Chernihiv Oblast includes dashboards, web maps, and other summary data that demonstrate the state of surface water pollution. For deeper understanding of the nature of pollution, the system offers charts and other dynamic analysis tools. These resources allow users to track pollution trends in real time and identify factors that cause significant increases in the concentration of harmful substances in surface waters.

The system also offers tools for analysing the impact of agricultural and industrial activities on surface water quality. This in-depth analysis is valuable for identifying potential sources of pollution and directing efforts to eliminate them.

Olena Rudych, Programme Coordinator, Local Governance and Decentralisation Reform (RPP) emphasized the importance of the monitoring system. “In times of war, environmental monitoring and data collection help calculate and reduce potential environmental risks,” she said. “Together with the Government of Sweden and national partners, we believe that this online monitoring system will play a key role in preserving water quality in Chernihiv Oblast, and that it can be scaled up nationally and implemented across the country.”
