Denmark and UNDP launch a Community Hub in Mykolaiv Oblast
June 16, 2025
Bashtanka, Mykolaiv Oblast, 16 June 2025 — The Government of Denmark, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ukraine, has supported a grant initiative to establish a community hub in Bashtanka, Mykolaiv Oblast. The hub was created as a safe, inclusive, and dialogue-driven space to provide educational, training, and advisory services to local residents. It aims to foster social cohesion, strengthen partnerships between the community and local authorities, and engage civil society in the processes of recovery and development.
The space was established within the premises of the Department of Education of the Bashtanka City Council, which co-financed the renovation work. The hub has been equipped with modern computers and essential furniture, made possible through financial support from the Government of Denmark and assistance from UNDP totalling US$40,000.
The hub will host a variety of educational and advisory activities, including individual psychological sessions using art therapy methods, a project management school, and digital literacy courses. In addition, the hub will serve as a platform for collaboration with the local Youth Council and the Council of Internally Displaced Persons.
Jakob Torrild Hansen, the Head of the Danish Embassy Office in Mykolaiv, emphasized that Denmark continues to support the systematic recovery of Mykolaiv Oblast in partnership with UNDP and local communities. “We believe that strong communities are the foundation of a resilient democracy,” said Mr Hansen. “The opening of the community hub in Bashtanka is another step towards strengthening social cohesion, engaging citizens in decision-making processes, and supporting those affected by the war. Denmark is proud to contribute to community recovery efforts across Ukraine.”
Jaco Cilliers, UNDP Resident Representative in Ukraine, highlighted the importance of supporting local efforts. “Community hubs like the one in Bashtanka are powerful examples of how people can come together, learn, and grow — even in the most challenging circumstances,” said Mr Cilliers. “At UNDP, we are committed to supporting inclusive spaces where people can gain new skills, launch initiatives, and engage actively in community life. Together with our partners, we aim to ensure that such hubs become anchor points on the path to sustainable recovery and development.”
The initiative “Community Hubs as places of unity and community strength” was implemented by the “Save the World” Centre for Tourism Development and Environmental Protection with support from UNDP in Ukraine and financial support from the Government of Denmark.
