Turkmen students played the role of the Ambassadors by simulating Model UN of the UN General Assembly

Turkmen students played the role of the UN ambassadors by simulating Model UN of the UN General Assembly

On 24 October 2023, the Institute of State, Law and Democracy of Turkmenistan together with the UNDP in Turkmenistan conducted a competition in the format of Model UN as a simulation of the UN General Assembly by Turkmen students. The event was dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the 30th anniversary of the Vienna Declaration and Plan of Action (VDPA).

The competition involved students from 5 universities and institutes of Turkmenistan, who presented the statement in a format of simulation of the UN General Assembly on randomly selected topics such as: 

1. UDHR, VDPA and peace and security issues;

2. UDHR, VDPA and ensuring the rights of persons with disabilities;

3. UDHR, VDPA and protection of children's rights;

4. UDHR, VDPA and gender equality issues;

5. The role of the UDHR, VDPA in preventing racial discrimination.

The jury of the contest consisted of the representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), Institute of State, Law and Democracy of Turkmenistan, Ministry of Education, Youth organization of Turkmenistan named after Mahtumkuli, as well as national and international experts of UNDP.

According to the results of the competition, the jury announced the following winners:

1st place award was won by students from the Institute of International Relations of the MFA;

2nd place award was taken by students of the Turkmen National Institute of World Languages named after Dovletmammet Azady; and

3rd place award was shared by students from the Institute of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Turkmenistan and International University of Humanities and Development of Turkmenistan.

All winners were recognized by UNDP with diplomas, certificates, and prizes.

“I hope that this Model UN competition, held today to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 30th anniversary of the Vienna Declaration and Plan of Action, will help to raise awareness of Turkmenistan's progress in cooperating with the UN General Assembly, UN Human Rights Treaty Bodies, and UN Human Rights Council, and to promote the human rights agenda in the country and beyond,” – said Mr. Tomica Paovic, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in Turkmenistan.

The contest was organized in the framework of the three-year UNDP project: "Assistance in the Implementation of the National Action Plan of Turkmenistan in the area of human rights for 2021-2025" implemented jointly with the Institute of State, Law, and Democracy of Turkmenistan and aimed at raising knowledge on human rights among students of Turkmenistan. 

The Government of Canada also contributed to the event within the joint project of UNDP with the Institute of State, Law and Democracy of Turkmenistan.
