UNDP in Turkmenistan, together with the Nature Protection Society of Turkmenistan (NPST) has marked the World Environment Day, June 5, 2022, by cleaning up the Caspian Sea beach.

This initiative engaged the staff of the UNDP and the NPST, as well as local community, who actively embarked on a beach clean-up exercise to set an example to others and encourage public changing attitudes and behavior towards environmentally friendly practices that can have a profound effect for environment conservation.

“The Paris Agreement paved the way for the world to work together and now we are responsible for achieving these goals, which require our collective efforts,” - noted Mr. Batyr Ballyyev, Project Manager of the UNDP/GEF project “Sustainable Cities in Turkmenistan: Integrated Green Urban Development in Ashgabat and Avaza”. “We, the people need to provide our individual action to combat climate change, and we need to support governments in building a more sustainable future for all. The behavior of each of us matters and adds value to global climate action.”

“Today, we once again join hands with the UNDP to affirm the importance of environmental education and raise public awareness, as well as engage the local communities in maintaining an environmentally conscious lifestyle,” - noted Merdan Arazmedov, Head of the division of the Nature Protection Society of Turkmenistan.

Each year June 5 is celebrated as World Environment Day. It is the United Nations flagship day for promoting worldwide awareness and action for the environment.

The 2022 theme is “Only One Earth" to call for transformative changes in policies and individual choices to enable cleaner, greener, and sustainable living in harmony with nature.

UNDP has decades of experience supporting countries to take action on climate change. Together with other development partners UNDP has helped people and communities in over 140 countries to reach their climate goals and respond to challenges of climate change.
