A New Generation of Changemakers

“If you find something that ignites your passion, pursue it relentlessly—but always let it serve others.” The message from UNDP Tanzania’s Resident Representative, Shigeki Komatsubara, set the tone for a boot camp designed to inspire, challenge, and empower. In a bold move to bridge learning with action, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Tanzania hosted the Student Ambassador Boot Camp 2025 at its offices in Dar es Salaam from 2-3 October. The gathering brought together vibrant student ambassadors from universities across the country, young leaders united by a shared commitment to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and shaping Tanzania’s development story. The boot camp marked both a culmination and beginning: the close of the ambassadors’ mentorship journey with UNDP and the start of their next chapter as advocates for inclusive and sustainable growth in their communities.

About the UNDP Student Ambassador Programme (SAP)

The UNDP Student Ambassador Programme is a global youth empowerment initiative that connects university students with UNDP offices worldwide. It gives young people a platform to learn, grow, and lead through practical engagement with development issues. Ambassadors serve for about Six months, representing UNDP within their universities and local communities. They help raise awareness about the Sustainable Development Goals, promote UNDP’s mission and career pathways, and gain hands-on experience in communication, leadership, and community engagement. Beyond training, the programme connects young people to a global network of peers and mentors from over 17 countries and 50 universities, offering access to professional exposure, skills-building, and opportunities to contribute meaningfully to real-world change.

Learning Through Action

The 2025 Boot Camp opened with a powerful and heartfelt session led by Dr. Isaac Maro, a health expert. His talk on, emotional resilience, self-awareness, and mental well-being struck a chord with the ambassadors.

Dr. Isaac Maro emphasized on three things, the ability to know time, the ability to know people and the ability to know the place.

“Mental health is not a luxury—it’s a foundation for sustainable leadership,” Dr. Maro reminded them. "You cannot pour from an empty cup. Take care of yourselves as you take care of your communities.”  The learning did not stop in the meeting rooms. The Ambassadors and UNDP staff embarked on a field visit to Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology (DIT), one of UNDP’s innovation partners supported through collaboration with the EU and Government of Ireland. There, they saw firsthand how renewable energy labs and digital innovation are shaping innovative solutions for education and sustainable technology.

Later that day, they joined hands with students at Jangwani Girls Secondary School in a lively community engagement initiative. Together they:
•    Planted trees (donated by Tanzania Forest Services) to promote environmental sustainability and legacy building.

•    Led interactive sessions on mental health, quality education and gender equality, aligning with SDG 4 and SDG 5.
During their outreach, the ambassadors also donated bedsheets and sunscreen to students with albinism, spreading kindness and inclusion along the way. “Planting trees and engaging with students reminded me why I joined this programme - to create impact and inspire others,” said Mary Davis, one of the student ambassadors.

Voices of Leadership
Throughout the bootcamp, the UNDP team emphasized the importance of youth in shaping Tanzania’s development future. “Youth are not just the leaders of tomorrow—they are the change makers of today,” said Shigeki Komatsubara, UNDP Resident Representative. “Aim high, be ambitious, challenge yourselves, work hard, and stay together. That is the reason we are so invested in the UNDP Student Ambassadors.”

A Lasting Impact
As the bootcamp concluded, there was a clear sense of transformation – of confidence built, friendships formed, and perspectives broadened.

“Seeing the ambassadors engage with real-world projects and communities shows the power of experiential learning,” noted Veronica Sigalla, Talent Development Manager at UNDP. “These young leaders are ready to make a difference.”

Armed with new skills, networks and purpose, the ambassadors leave not just as programme alumni but as storytellers, innovators and changemakers ready to drive progress in their own communities.
Their journey with UNDP may be ending, but their mission to create a fairer, greener, and more inclusive world has only just begun.
