Inclusive democratic governance

Transparency. Efficiency. Participation.

UNDP is convinced that a progressive control of corruption accompanied by equitable access to justice, peaceful electoral processes and good governance would allow public institutions, civil society, and the media, at national and subnational levels, to execute their roles with confidence while being accountable to the people of Tanzania.

Thus, UNDP's work in the governance sector is to promote transparent and accountable democratic institutions and processes that are responsive to the needs of citizens, particularly vulnerable groups, and that remain committed to the rule of law while adhering to international human rights norms and standards.

The Inclusive Democratic Governance programme also seeks to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with a primary focus on SDG 5 on Gender Equality and Women Empowerment, SDG 16 on the promotion of peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development; ensuring access to justice for all; and building effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels, and SDG 17 on Partnerships for Development.

Strong Partnership with the Government

UNDP has been able to work closely with the Government and the people of Tanzania in ensuring issues of democracy, human rights and governance in general are observed in transparency way and are inclusive of youth, women and people with disabilities across the country. The COVID19 pandemic continues to pose limitations on the governance space - specifically on civic participation and full enjoyment of human rights. UNDP welcomes all partners - especially the international community, to join this collaboration so that we move Tanzania to achieve its development aspirations while promoting transparency, accountability, and the realisation of civil rights.

The Programme priorities going forward will be on strengthening institutions, policies, systems, and processes that are aimed at improving the delivery of democratic dividends to citizens, while enabling citizens to participate in public policy making and holding institutions accountable for the delivery of such dividends. Improved capacity for efficient and effective public service delivery at local level will be one of the primary areas of focus. Further, the programme will also work to improve human rights protection peace, security and stability for development, access to and delivery of justice to all, especially marginalised population groups. Promoting transparent and accountability through anti-corruption initiatives at national and sub-national levels.
