UNDP Suriname and the Ministry of Natural Resources discuss future cooperation for Sustainable Energy in Suriname
Renewable energy for the interior of Suriname
December 1, 2025
UNDP Suriname and the Ministry of Natural Resources (NH) successfully conducted a series of validation sessions with representatives of indigenous and tribal communities across 21 villages located across Brokopondo, Upper Suriname, Upper Coppename, Tibiti, Upper Saramacca, and Tapanahony. This initiative is part of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Joint Fund Programme titled “Development of Market-Ready, Bankable Pipelines for a Just Energy Transition in the Interior of Suriname” (JET JP). Its primary objective is to develop financing-ready, tailor-made proposals to bring 24-hour energy access in the interior of Suriname.
During each session, UNDP Suriname and the Ministry of Natural Resources presented the technical design and cost estimates. Importantly, the Project ensured that the proposed solutions reflect the needs and expectations of the communities involved. It was followed by a step-by-step review of the data together with village leaders and local representatives. Such a collaborative approach not only confirmed the accuracy of the information but also strengthened community support for the planned energy transition.
The UN JET joint project is implemented through a partnership between the Ministry of Natural Resources, UNDP Suriname, and the World Food Programme (WFP). The transition to 24-hour electricity in indigenous and tribal communities directly contributes to SDG 7, ensuring access to sustainable and renewable energy. It further stimulates economic growth and employment (SDG 8) through investments in the green economy and supports climate action (SDG 13) by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, it advances gender equality (SDG 5) by creating increased opportunities for women within the energy transition, particularly in sustainable technology fields. The initiative also contributes to ecosystem protection (SDG 15) by minimizing the impact on natural resources.
