Statement by UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner on the occasion of the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia - 17 May
May 16, 2025
The International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia this year focuses on the power of communities to include and protect each other, including those from sexual and gender minorities. Many community leaders around the world are standing up for LGBTIQ+ people to protect them from violence and discrimination and to promote acceptance and respect.
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) stands with these community leaders and the broader United Nations family in supporting the human rights of all persons, including sexual and gender minorities, in line with the vision and values of the UN and globally agreed commitments. We also welcome the significant ongoing progress made towards advancing the human rights of LGBTIQ+ persons by many countries in the past year.
UNDP will continue to work with countries and communities in their efforts to advance our shared commitment to leave no one behind. That includes the many LGBTIQ+ people who are too often marginalized, impoverished and even criminalized. We remain firmly committed to a future where everyone, everywhere, can live with dignity and respect.
Achim Steiner, Administrator, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
