As the conflict in Sudan continues to escalate, I am gravely concerned for the Sudanese people affected by the violence.
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) remains present in Sudan. With our UN colleagues, we are moving to safer locations until the fighting subsides.
As in all conflicts, those most affected will be civilians and the most vulnerable. This crisis will deepen existing vulnerabilities and inequalities across the country with spillovers in the region. We stand in solidarity with the people of Sudan and remain committed to supporting them.
For almost 60 years, UNDP has worked with local communities in Sudan, supporting millions of people in need. With dedicated assistance from the international community and national partners, we have focused on supporting those left behind in key areas of development. Hard-won development gains must not be wiped out.
UNDP is committed to contributing to emergency response efforts and support to Sudanese people’s livelihoods and urgent community service recovery, as part of the collective UN efforts, as conditions allow.
We join the Secretary General’s call for the warring parties to immediately cease hostilities and return to peace talks, for the future of Sudan and its people.
