UNDP Resident Representative, Mohamed Abchir

UNDP South Sudan Country office is honored to join the UN family, partners, the citizens of South Sudan and the entire globe in marking the 2025 International Women’s Day themed; "#Accelerate Action." and the national theme “Empowering Women and Girls to Promote Safety and a Healthy Environment,”.

This year’s celebration, marks 30 years since the Beijing Declaration, and the 50th anniversary of the United Nations establishing the International Women’s Day on 8 March 1975. With the rallying theme “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.”, this year’s International Women’s Day is a powerful reminder of progress made and a call for collective action – a pivotal moment to push forward, to mobilize global solidarity, and to honor decades of hard-fought advances.

On this International Women’s Day 2025, we stand in solidarity with the resilient South Sudanese women, who have demonstrated remarkable resilience in the face of adversity, from conflict to economic hardships, climate change, and with many more who continue to face barriers to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, yet continue to accomplish great things.

However, as we celebrate, let us also bear in mind that there are many women out there at the sub-national level who continue to live in hardship due to climate change and other crisis, including GBV/SGBV and so need an increase in protection for the women and girls living in open shelters, who lack support and recognition.

UNDP is committed to empowering women and girls in South Sudan through fostering opportunities for inclusion in peacebuilding, leadership and governance, economic empowerment, access to justice and health, and climate change in their communities.

Let us all work together to build a world where every woman and girl can thrive in safety, dignity, and equality because empowering women is empowering humanity— ‘Guwa Ta Mara’
