The most drastic form of violence against women is femicide - the murder of a woman by a man, motivated by hatred of women and done out of contempt and a sense of superiority, with the perpetrator believing he has the right to take the life of a woman. The presence and availability of firearms and their misuse for violence against women increases the risk and likelihood of death in the context of gender-based violence. Despite important legislative and institutional changes, murders of women in family and partnership contexts continue to occur. This analysis of cases of femicide with firearms seeks to enhance the understanding of the phenomenon of femicide by considering the circumstances and factors that precede it, as well as the adequacy of existing risk assessment practices, with the goal of improving institutional practice and preventing further gender-based killing of women.
