Iraq, Ukraine and Yemen case studies
This series of country case studies examines how UNDP has operationalized the Humanitarian-Development-Peace Nexus in Yemen, Iraq, and Ukraine in recent years. They were developed by UNDP’s Crisis Bureau through a consultative process combining desk research, close collaboration with Regional Bureaux and Country Offices, and internal peer review.
Each case study presents the country's context and evolving needs and examines how the Nexus has been implemented since its emergence and how it has evolved over time. It highlights the key processes established to strengthen coordination, coherence, and complementarity across humanitarian, development, and peace efforts, including coordination platforms, joint analysis, and strategic planning frameworks. Rather than presenting standalone “Nexus programmes,” the studies focus on programmatic entry points intentionally designed to bridge gaps between pillars, integrating resilience, institutional support, and social cohesion, while incorporating peace considerations. They also explore financing mechanisms that support Nexus implementation.
The case studies conclude with key lessons learned on operationalizing the Nexus in diverse crisis settings. They underscore the importance of sustained coordination, context-specific approaches, and flexible programming to strengthen coherence, reduce vulnerabilities, build resilience, and support transitions from crisis response toward recovery, development, and peace.
