Ocean Promise: From Vision to Impact

June 27, 2025

Under the UNDP Nature Pledge, the Ocean Promise supports 100 coastal countries—including all Small Island Developing States (SIDS)—to realize the full potential of sustainable, climate-resilient, and inclusive ocean economies by 2030. Launched at the Second UN Ocean Conference in Lisbon, the Ocean Promise aims to accelerate sustainable fisheries, reduce marine pollution, expand marine protected areas, and strengthen marine spatial planning and ocean governance. With targets to sustainably manage over 16 million km² of ocean space, empower over 1,000 coastal communities, and mobilize $1 billion in ocean finance, the initiative addresses the estimated $1 trillion in annual economic losses from unsustainable ocean use. Fully aligned with the UNDP Nature Pledge, the Ocean Promise contributes to the Value Shift, Economic & Finance Shift, and Policy & Practice Shift, supporting UNDP’s Strategic Plan goals and the SIDS Offer’s Blue Economy pillar.
