Australia and UNDP Support PNG Parliament In Launching Its New Website

The National Parliament of Papua New Guinea officially launched its new website, marking a significant milestone in the Parliament's digital transformation and its commitment to greater transparency, accessibility and public engagement.

The new website was developed through the Strengthening Papua New Guinea's Parliament Project, which is implemented by UNDP with generous funding from the Australian Government.

The website provides citizens with easier access to parliamentary business, including legislation, committee proceedings, reports, publications, and institutional information. By making parliamentary information more readily available, the platform strengthens transparency, supports informed public participation, and enables citizens across Papua New Guinea to better understand and engage with the work of Parliament.

"An institution's website is its digital front door. It is the bridge that connects the Parliament to the citizens we serve across our vast provinces, our remote islands, and to the global community watching Papua New Guinea. Today, we step through a new, modernised digital door, one designed to strengthen transparency, public engagement and modern parliamentary governance," stated the Clerk of the National Parliament, Mr. Kala Aufa, at the launching ceremony.

"Today, we are not simply unveiling a new digital platform. We are opening a new window into the soul of our democracy. This new website is our pledge to tear down those invisible walls and our commitment to ensuring that the House of the People is truly accessible by the people. Our goal is simple: to make democracy understandable, accessible and meaningful to every single Papua New Guinean,” added Acting Speaker of the National Parliament, Hon. Koni Iguan.

Mr. Craig Gillies, Counsellor (Subnational, Humanitarian and Accountability) at the Australian High Commission, welcomed the launch, highlighting the importance of ensuring citizens can easily access parliamentary information and better understand how democracy works:

"Providing access and enabling people to reach and understand the importance of our democracy and how their democracy works is really important. We hope that the website will serve as an effective public engagement tool, enabling citizens to more easily access parliamentary information and follow important committee work and decisions."

The project also supported the National Parliament in developing Committee Recommendation Tracking System (CRTS), enabling Parliament to monitor the implementation of committee recommendations. Together, these digital platforms strengthen transparency, accountability and public access to parliamentary information, while enhancing Parliament's oversight functions.

"Today's launch is about more than technology; it is about strengthening democratic governance. These achievements reflect what can be accomplished through strong partnerships, and UNDP is proud to support the National Parliament in its efforts to strengthen democratic institutions. Together, we are supporting stronger, more effective and more transparent institutions that are open and accessible to all citizens," concluded UNDP Deputy Resident Representative, Mr. Aadil Mansoor.
