Lebanon continues to face overlapping political, economic and social challenges that place sustained pressure on institutions, communities and social cohesion. Prolonged instability, recurring security incidents, displacement, economic hardship and unresolved legacies of past conflict continue to deepen vulnerabilities and increase the risk of tensions. At the same time, polarization, misinformation, hate speech and declining trust in institutions further complicate efforts to build lasting peace.

For more than two decades, UNDP has worked alongside national and local partners to strengthen peacebuilding as a long-term investment in stability, resilience and inclusive development. Recognizing that sustainable peace depends on both strong institutions and resilient communities, UNDP works across national, municipal and community levels to prevent conflict, strengthen dialogue and social cohesion, and build the capacities needed to manage tensions and respond to crises. This includes supporting local conflict-prevention mechanisms, peace education, responsible and conflict-sensitive media, community dialogue and mediation, and opportunities for women and youth to participate meaningfully in shaping solutions within their communities.

UNDP also supports Lebanon in addressing the unresolved legacy of past conflict by advancing dialogue, reconciliation and efforts related to truth-seeking, remembrance and the rights of families of the missing and forcibly disappeared. Across these areas, the emphasis remains on strengthening local ownership, building trust between citizens and institutions, and promoting inclusive and evidence-based approaches to peacebuilding. Together, these efforts connect immediate conflict-prevention needs with longer-term institutional and societal change, contributing to a more peaceful, inclusive and resilient Lebanon.
