Promoting Circular Economy and Waste Management at cities in five countries
The project aims to support Kazakhstan’s transition towards a circular economy by addressing key barriers in waste management systems, including limited recycling infrastructure, insufficient financing mechanisms, weak policy implementation, and low public participation. Particular focus will be placed on the Caspian regions of Atyrau and Mangystau, where rapid industrial development, growing tourism, and increasing pollution create significant environmental challenges.
The project is composed of four main components:
Development of policy instruments and financing mechanisms to unlock public and private investments in circular economy solutions, including sustainable public procurement approaches;
Support for women- and youth-led circular business initiatives through pilot projects and a dedicated funding scheme in Atyrau and Mangystau regions;
Strengthening platforms for innovation, awareness raising, knowledge exchange, and waste data management;
Enhancing analytical and technical capacities through waste stream assessments, Material Flow Analysis (MFA), Urban Metabolism Analysis, and training activities on circular economy, plastics, and waste management.
