UNDP North Macedonia: A Greener Tomorrow Starts Today
November 20, 2025
Every morning, as office buildings come to life, lights flick on, air conditioners hum to life, and computers buzz awake, a silent wave of energy use begins. Across countless workplaces, this daily routine adds up to a massive global footprint. For years, the answer seemed to lie in smarter technologies and greener equipment. But as energy demand keeps rising, one truth is becoming clear, real change starts not just with machines, but with the people who use them.
As the world races to respond to the growing call for sustainability, UNDP North Macedonia is turning words into action. From its offices to its projects, UNDP North Macedonia is charting a path toward a greener future, leading by example and proving that real change begins within by integrating environmental responsibility and resource efficiency into everyday operations, fully aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals.
Leading by Example
“UNDP North Macedonia’s commitment to sustainability goes beyond words, it’s about action and leading by example,” said Armen Grigoryan, UNDP Resident Representative. “By investing in renewable energy, clean transport, and smart efficiency solutions, we’re proving that going green isn’t just possible, it’s essential for building a sustainable future.
Powering Change through Solar Energy
At the heart of this green transition lies a simple idea, generating clean energy for one’s own needs. UNDP North Macedonia has taken this step by installing solar panels in its office yard, producing its own electricity and moving closer to energy independence while cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
By using photovoltaics, the office produces 5.2 MWh of electricity annually, covering approximately 6% of total energy consumption and achieving a CO₂ reduction of 3.8 tons. Beyond the environmental benefits, solar installation has transformed the office yard into a vibrant outdoor space for staff to meet, relax, and engage, bringing together sustainability and wellbeing.
Greener Mobility: Transforming the Fleet
Change is also happening on the move, the office has refreshed its vehicle fleet, swapping conventional petrol and diesel cars for electric, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid models that make every journey cleaner and more efficient. Between 2018 and 2025, the organization achieved a 70% reduction in annual fuel expenses and an estimated 40 - 50% cut in CO₂ emissions, equivalent to around 8 - 9 tons less CO₂ per year.
- Fuel costs dropped from USD 16,987 in 2018 to approximately USD 4,968 in 2025.
- The number of conventional vehicles decreased from 15 to 6.
- Average fuel cost per vehicle fell by more than half.
With these transitions, we have proven that sustainability and cost-effectiveness can go hand in hand. Continued electrification of the fleet will bring even greater savings and move us closer to near-zero emissions.
Energy Efficiency at Every Level
The office has implemented several other energy efficiency measures aimed at minimizing consumption:
- Security lighting: Replaced old floodlights with energy-efficient photovoltaic models, saving 2 - 3 MWh annually (≈2 tons CO₂).
- IT equipment: Regularly replaced old laptops, monitors, and network devices with modern, energy-efficient models, achieving combined savings of 6 - 7 MWh per year.
- Servers: Migrated all servers to the cloud, saving 7 - 10 MWh annually.
- Network equipment: Old network equipment has been replaced with new devices operating 24/7, achieving 25–30% energy savings, or around 1 MWh per year.
- Automation: Installed devices for automatic switching of office equipment outside working hours, further reducing energy waste.
Innovation with Smart Technologies
Technology is playing its part too, sensor stations now keep a close eye on the office’s daily rhythm, tracking air quality, occupancy, and energy use in real time. These smart devices help cut energy waste, keep the air clean, and ensure a safe workplace, automatically adjusting lights and temperature when needed and providing vital data in case of emergencies.
Beyond the Office: Tackling Air Pollution and Financing Green Solutions
The office’s green efforts don’t stop at its own doorstep. Aware that air pollution remains one of the country’s biggest challenges, UNDP North Macedonia is helping households breathe easier, improving energy efficiency and raising awareness about cleaner indoor air. In one of Skopje’s most polluted neighborhoods, 129 families have already seen the difference through upgraded homes that cut both emissions and energy bills. Building on this success, the initiative has now expanded to five more cities, Kavadarci, Gostivar, Strumica, Kumanovo, and Struga — bringing cleaner air and lower costs to even more communities.
Through the Green Finance Facility, UNDP North Macedonia is helping households and businesses take real steps toward a greener future, unlocking new investments in sustainable energy and climate solutions and making financing more accessible for those ready to go green.
By pairing practical action with innovative financing, our organization is showing that caring for the environment isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s a smart investment in progress and a model for how sustainable practices can start right at the office.
