Information Integrity Interventions Landscape Report

This landscape report examines how misinformation, disinformation and other forms of information pollution are affecting climate action and responses to climate-related disasters, and how different actors are responding. It draws on a mapping of several hundred information integrity interventions across thematic areas, including almost fifty focused specifically on climate change and climate-related disasters, to identify patterns in the types of challenges addressed, approaches and strategies deployed, and actors involved.

Based on this sample, the report finds that climate-related information integrity efforts are concentrated largely on detection and response, while prevention, recovery and community-based approaches remain less prominent. It also identifies structural gaps related to platform participation, regional coordination, sustainable funding and the connection between digital and community-based approaches. The analysis does not explore the reasons for higher or lower prevalence of certain efforts, neither does it assess the effectiveness of individual interventions; rather, it examines how information integrity interventions related to climate change and related disasters are designed, implemented and positioned within the broader information integrity landscape. The report compares its climate-specific findings with practice in other policy areas and ends with nine key conclusions that seek to inform future policy, programming, partnerships and research.

In short, the report provides a clearer understanding of how information pollution affects climate change and climate-related disasters, how actors are responding to these challenges, and what lessons can inform future action towards strengthening information integrity in climate and disaster-related contexts.
