A two-day seminar on climate change brought together 30 educators from Belarus to strengthen climate education and inspire youth-led climate action.
Climate of the Future: Education for Sustainable Development
October 13, 2025
The seminar took place on 30 September - 1 October in a hybrid format (in Minsk and online).
The event provided a space for sharing ideas and experiences on how to talk to students about the climate crisis, find practical solutions, and embed sustainability into everyday learning. Participants explored the scientific, economic and social dimensions of climate change, with a particular focus on gender equality and youth participation.
As global climate challenges intensify, nurturing a sense of environmental responsibility and helping young people understand their role in shaping the planet’s future has never been more important. One of the key approaches discussed was the peer-to-peer model, where young people share knowledge with their peers, inspiring collective action and lasting change.
Teachers play a central role in this process, guiding youth initiatives, supporting new ideas, and fostering networks of young climate volunteers in schools and communities.
The seminar helped educators expand their understanding of climate change, its impacts and adaptation pathways, while equipping them with practical tools for classroom and extracurricular work.
The programme featured lectures and interactive sessions led by experts from the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Participants explored Belarus’ international climate commitments and national climate policy, as well as the country’s contribution to Sustainable Development Goal 13 (Climate Action). Discussions also addressed the potential of carbon trading and the development of Belarus’ new nationally determined contribution (NDC 3.0) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The event concluded with an online discussion, Voices of the Future, highlighting how young people can influence the climate agenda and bring their ideas to life.
Educators were also introduced to the Climate Box, a methodological toolkit containing climate-focused lessons, projects and community activities.
The seminar was organised within the Climate Education to Advance SDGs and Climate Action (Climate Box) and Global Climate Promise – From Pledge to Impact – Belarus projects implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Belarus.
