Shaping solutions to plastic pollution: A catalogue of promising ideas

August 4, 2025

Around the world, innovators, entrepreneurs, and communities are leading the way in reimagining how plastics are produced, used, and managed. Their efforts not only reduce plastic waste but also create jobs, improve public health, and empower underserved communities. However, many of these promising initiatives remain underutilized due to limited regulatory support, visibility and support for scaling up.

This catalogue highlights ten promising ideas identified through the Japan-supported Global Plastics Innovation Programme. These locally driven solutions address various facets of the plastic crisis, offering a wide range of approaches, from reuse and refill models to alternative materials and data insights to community-driven cleanups and awareness raising. With the right support and policy backing, these ideas serve as valuable stepping stones in the fight against plastic pollution.
