Context

The world is facing compounding crises. Democratic backsliding, increasing authoritarianism, deepening geopolitical rivalries and shrinking civic space have weakened the very systems meant to protect rights and uphold the rule of law. The foundations of justice, peace and human rights are under extraordinary pressure.

Fragile and conflict-affected contexts are growing in number and complexity, and multilateral cooperation, once the backbone of peacebuilding, is being tested like never before. At the same time, investments in justice, human rights and rule of law remain disproportionately low and without urgent political and financial recommitment, hard-won gains are at risk of being lost.

The erosion of support for justice, human rights and the rule of law is not merely a funding issue: it is a global governance crisis.

Solution-driven dialogue for change

During its Annual Meeting on Rule of Law and Human Rights, UNDP and its Global Programme for Strengthening the Rule of Law, Human Rights, Justice and Security for Sustainable Peace and Development (Global Programme) will provide a space for frank conversations, and aim to define the best pathways to reach our shared objectives. It is an invitation to get together, explore bold ideas and new partnerships, inspire and be inspired by people, best practices and promising innovations.

Each of the three open thematic plenaries will focus on a key challenge and opportunity facing the rule of law and human rights today. Specifically, the meeting will:

•    explore the future of security and justice programming in fragile and conflict-affected settings
•    examine how reinforcing human rights safeguards contributes to inclusive and people-centred security
•    devise an approach to de-risking finance and how human rights due diligence, data and disclosure can limit risks in finance markets

The Global Programme will also hold its Partners Advisory Group meeting (by invitation).
