Description of investment

The intended works encompass:

  • Excavation works;
  • Laying of pipes;
  • Construction of manholes;
  • Filling and backfilling;
  • Road Reinstatement; and
  • Pumping Stations.

In total, 12.9 km of pipes are being laid and 1283 houses connected to the new sewerage lines.

Intended beneficiary

Direct beneficiaries: 1283 families living in Mandres/Hamitkoy.

Indirect beneficiaries: Turkish Cypriot local community of Nicosia.

Scope of works

The neighbourhood of Mandres/Hamitkoy is currently only partially covered by a sewerage network. It is a residential area, and the vast majority of houses/living units are not connected to the sewerage. They are using septage tanks for their wastewater which represents a financial burden for the inhabitants as well as represent an environmental risk for the discharge of the septage. 

Actions taken by UNDP
  1. Designs
    Completed at the beginning of 2023, with an update for cost estimate in May 2023. The designs were prepared by the beneficiary with support by UNDP for the preparation of the technical specifications and the BoQ.
  2. Property checks
    Completed in October 2023. Property checks with the MFA of the RoC took a long time. It started in early 2022. It delayed the project significantly the implementation of the project and at one point, the project was put on hold due to it.  
  3. Procurement
    Completed in March 2024
  4. Implementation of Works
    Contract signed: 8 April 2024
    Commencement date: 24 June 2024
    Substantive completion of works: 28 October 2025

Additional sections to be added to the contract due to savings.
