Mainstreaming gender-responsive disability inclusion in the humanitarian response in Ukraine
Donor
Joint initiative of UNDP, UN Women, the UN Children's Fund, the UN Population Fund is financed by the UN Partnership on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNPRPD).
Background
The Russian invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022 has resulted in an unprecedented loss of life, damage, destruction and displacement. The situation gets worse with every day the war continues.
People with disabilities face particular vulnerability in times of crisis, as they may encounter difficulties in escaping or choose to remain in affected areas, putting their lives at risk and impeding their ability to meet daily necessities. Moreover, they often encounter challenges in accessing essential humanitarian aid. Recent assessments reveal that individuals with disabilities constitute 20 percent of both internally displaced persons (IDPs) and non-displaced populations.
Key areas of activity
The initiative has made significant progress in advancing inclusive humanitarian response for people with disabilities. By creating knowledge products, conducting training sessions, and actively involving Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs), accessibility, inclusivity, and the protection of human rights have been enhanced, especially for people with disabilities, during emergency situations. The project's publications and research outcomes provide valuable resources for decision-makers involved in planning and response efforts. These resources underscore the significance of inclusive emergency programmes and the provision of accessible facilities for temporary accommodation.
