INSIGHTS: ISSUE NO 3_January 2022

January 18, 2022

With the support of UNDP, in 2021 the Rwanda Environment Management Authority acquired its first electric car and installed its first charging station.

As we enter 2022, this car is a small symbol of something much larger: our collective ambition to support Rwanda’s transformation into a prosperous, climate-friendly nation that leaves no one behind.

Rwanda aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 38% compared to business as usual by 2030, and to become an upper-middle-income economy that is carbon neutral and climate resilient by 2050.

UNDP Rwanda aspires to do its part by both investing in innovation across key economic sectors and by equipping the poorest sectors of society to adapt to climate change and to gain new skills for the future.

This often means focusing on farmers. A large majority of Rwanda’s population is employed in agriculture, yet farmers are among the least well off in Rwanda.

Our programs help rural communities to cope with climate impacts from drought or extreme rainfall and the associated challenges of food insecurity, displacement, and lost income.

Programs that amplify community-based solutions and that improve access to knowledge, resources, and technology are changing lives.

This is our first Newsletter for 2022. See how your support is strengthening resilience in a changing climate.

With warmest wishes for the New Year.
