Promoting Sustainable Rural Energy Technologies

What is the project about?

Promoting Sustainable Rural Energy Technologies (RETs) project aims to reduce Ethiopia’s energy-related CO2 emissions by approximately 2 m tonnes CO2e by promoting renewable energy and low greenhouse gas producing technologies as a substitute for fossil fuels and non-sustainable biomass utilisation. 

The project will seek to implement a more private sector-driven and market-based approach towards promoting renewable energy technologies in rural communities in Ethiopia. 

What have we accomplished so far?

  • National standards for improved biomass stoves and solar home systems approved
  • Laboratory equipments and instruments procured for the incubation centers to help regions comply with the national standards
  • Credit risk gurantee fund established at the Development bank of Ethiopia amounting $1.4 million and fiund management committee      established
  • National roadshow communication strategy developed and approved by Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Energy with pilot shows conducted in Benishangul and Gambella
  • Entrepreneurship training provided to 172 members of rural energy technnologies enterprises
  • Business development services training was given to 75 experts from nine regions
  • First round of rural energy technologies innovative idea small grant awarded to 14 enterprises
