Legal environment assessment on ambient air pollution and health in Ethiopia
June 16, 2025
Air pollution is one of the leading causes of non-communicable diseases and premature death worldwide. It was responsible for approximately 8.1 million premature deaths in 2021, of which vast majority occurred in low- and middle-income countries from diseases such as cardiovascular and respiratory disease, and cancers.1 In Ethiopia, more than 25,000 deaths and one million disease cases were attributable to ambient air pollution in 2019. The economic output lost due to air pollution-related disease was US$2.6 billion (ETB 91 billion) from premature mortality alone. Healthcare expenditures related to ambient air pollution-related diseases within the year were US$6.94 million (ETB 243 million).
