Kyiv, 20 November 2018 – What are the Global Goals or Sustainable Development Goals and how is Ukraine contributing to their implementations? These and other issues are being discussed at Sustainable Development Days organized by the United Nations Development Programme with the support of oblast and local authorities in 13 cities in Ukraine in November and December 2018.

The goals of the events are to share information on the Global Goals widely, ensure implementation of the Goals at local level, and create a network of partners and activists who will actively participate in implementing Agenda 2030 in the regions at oblast, rayon, and local level.

Representatives of rayon state administrations, amalgamated territorial communities, civil society, university students and teachers will prioritize the Sustainable Development Goals for their regions and discuss how to realize them at all levels. As Janthomas Hiemstra, UNDP Country Director said: “We believe that only if the people of Ukraine buy into this Agenda at oblast level, rayon level and hromada level, can we really change the country”.

Sustainable Development Days in the regions:

14 November – Chernivtsi

16 November – Kyiv, Odesa

22 November – Rivne, Kherson, Zhytomyr

26 November – Lviv

27 November – Ivano-Frankivsk

28 November – Uzhgorod

29 November – Cherkasy, Vinnytsia

30 November – Sumy

12 November – Ternopil

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity. The Sustainable Development Goals provide clear guidelines and targets for all countries to adopt in accordance with their own priorities and the environmental challenges of the world at large. The 17 Goals were adopted by world leaders in September 2015 at a United Nations Summit.

UNDP is supporting the Government of Ukraine to integrate the SDGs into national plans and development strategies. Achieving the SDGs requires the partnership of governments, the private sector, civil society and citizens. UNDP will continue working towards SDG localization in close partnership with oblast authorities.
