Sweden, Norway, and UNDP launch a grant competition to pilot first renewable energy communities in Moldova
January 17, 2025

Sweden, Norway, and UNDP are announcing a grant competition to select non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to pilot the first renewable energy communities in the Republic of Moldova. The funding is provided under the project “Resilient communities through women’s empowerment.” Through this competition, two NGOs will be selected to receive grants of US$100,000 each.
Interested NGOs can submit their applications by 5 February 2025, at 6:00 PM. More details are available at this link.
The selected organizations will carry out information and awareness campaigns to promote the benefits and steps required to establish renewable energy communities. Additionally, they will organize training sessions on the legal framework, forms of association, and renewable energy management.
Afterwards, each NGO will select a pilot community to receive the necessary expertise and mentorship for creating and registering a renewable energy community, equipping it with the required tools and developing the operational documentation.
The renewable energy communities established through this initiative will focus on advancing the decentralization of energy production by involving people in implementing sustainable energy solutions. This effort will contribute to the expansion of renewable energy communities across the country.
According to the December 2024 ANRE Regulation on Renewable Energy Communities, a document developed with UNDP support, renewable energy communities are autonomous entities controlled by local members or associates, including individuals, homeowner associations, non-profit entities, small and medium-sized enterprises, or local authorities. Their primary objective is to provide economic, social, and environmental benefits to local communities. By establishing renewable energy communities, conditions will be created to locally produce clean energy, involve people in the green energy transition process, and reduce energy vulnerabilities.
A renewable energy community will also help lower energy bills through reduced tariffs, support the creation of new jobs, decrease the carbon footprint, and enhance energy resilience.
This support from UNDP, Sweden, and Norway to pilot renewable energy communities contributes to strengthening the expertise of NGOs in Moldova in implementing emerging green energy solutions, aligned with European directives and practices.
